Die casting

Die casting is a high-speed, high-precision process ideal for producing large volumes of complex metal parts with excellent surface finish. In this video, we cover the fundamentals of die casting, its cost and tooling tradeoffs, and when it makes sense over other production methods.

Dicasting is the process used to make many commonly used metal parts.

Metal dicasting is a manufacturing process where molten metal is injected into a mold called a dye under high pressure.

When the metal cools and solidifies, it takes the shape of the dye, producing strong and precise parts.

The dicasting process follows four basic steps.

First, two halves of dyes are pressed together and clamped to form the part cavity.

Second, molten metal is injected into the dye cavity under high pressure.

Third, the metal cools and solidifies.

Finally, the finished shape is ejected from the dye.

After these four steps, the mold closes again and the cycle repeats, making dye casting perfect for mass production.

To use the part created by dye casting, excess material is trimmed away and the part may be machined or coated for its final form.

There are two main types of dye casting machines.

Hot chamber machines used for alloys with low melting temperatures such as zinc.

Cold chamber machines used for alloys with high melting temperatures such as aluminum.

Dye casting is used for non-ferrous alloys.

The four most common alloys that are dye cast are aluminum, zinc, magnesium and copper brass alloys.

It offers strong mechanical properties for durable parts.

Common products created by dye casting include toys, enclosures, plumbing fixtures, electronic casings, decorative items, automotive components.

Dye casting creates parts with high precision and repeatability.

It also produces good surface finish.

Dye casting is a fast process and it can create complex shapes.
